SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – SANDHURST DIVISION

Cricket – Senior Boys

The Catherine McAuley College Bendigo Senior Cricket team competed in the Sandhurst Division on Monday 19 February, on our beautiful new ovals at the Mercy Junortoun Sporting Precinct. Playing in front of the Coolock students, who packed the sidelines during break times was a real thrill for the team and an experience they won’t forget.

CMCB batted first in Round 1 of the competition against SEDA and got off to a flying start, thanks to a quick-fire 70 from Xavier Grant. CMCB maintained momentum throughout the innings with boundaries following regularly from Taj Taylor (68 not out) and Tobie Travaglia (55 not out). After their 20 overs, CMC had managed to post an imposing total of 4/246.

In reply, SEDA struggled against a disciplined CMCB bowling attack, who were able to make regular breakthroughs. SEDA were bowled out for 42, with Darby Whatley the pick of the bowlers with 3/8 off 2 overs.

With the victory, CMCB progressed through to the final against Bendigo Senior Secondary College (BSSC). CMCB batted first and although they lost 2 quick wickets, they managed to keep a high run rate to begin the innings. Unfortunately, the innings lost momentum through the middle due to regular wickets falling and no substantial partnerships. Taj Taylor produced some excellent late-order hitting, with his score of 36 including 4 sixes. CMCB were eventually bowled out for 115.

In response, BSSC struggled to develop any significant partnerships, as the CMCB bowlers and fielding group created a difficult scoring environment. Henry Edwards led the way with the ball in taking 3/8 off 4 overs and Jasper Irwin picked up 2/9 off 4 overs. The highlight of the innings was Gus Hay’s acrobatic catch, which topped off an excellent performance in the field from the CMCB boys. BSSC were bowled out for 71 to give CMCB a 44-run victory.

CMCB now progress to the Loddon Mallee Regional stage of the competition, to be played on Tuesday 5 March in Echuca.
