SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – LODDON MALLEE REGIONAL

Basketball – Year 7 & Year 8 Finals

On Friday 13 October, the Year 7 and Year 8 Boys and Girls Basketball teams competed at the Loddon Mallee Region Finals at the Red Energy Arena in Bendigo. Two teams have now qualified for the State Finals.

Year 7 Girls

The team played two games for the day, with the first game against Maryborough Education Centre. Our girls started strongly with a full-court press that created some easy baskets and an early lead. By halftime, we had a handy lead of 45-6. Our second half concentrated more on running offences and half-court man-to-man defence. We came away with a win 87-16.

Our second game was against St Joseph’s College, Echuca. Again, we started strongly but we did have a stronger opponent. Our team played well with all players contributing both in offence and defence for a final score of 59-11.

Our team has now qualified for SSV State Finals in Melbourne. Well done to the girls on a successful day, thank you to Ellie and Darcey for scoring and to our assistant coach Charlize Pinder.

Year 7 Boys

The Year 7 Boys played their first game against St Joseph’s College Echuca. This was quite a physical game, which surprised the boys. They couldn’t overcome the physically stronger opponents and went down 35-29. The second game against Irymple Secondary College was very similar; quite physical, and their bigger bodies had the advantage. We lost 16-30.

The third game against Bendigo South-East College was a re-match from the last tournament. In a close affair, with several lead changes, we snatched the lead in the last minute of the game, iced the remainder of the game, drawing many fouls, winning 35-34 and getting some pride back.

Year 8 Girls

The Year 8 Girls played three games for the day and once again, were excellent ambassadors for the College, displaying sound skills and sportsmanship. Although we had high hopes, unfortunately, we fell short of winning all our games, but we were proud of our efforts against strong competition. Thanks again to Mia Harvey for her support as assistant coach.

The results:
Game 1 – St Joseph’s College Echuca def CMC 11-9

Year 8 Boys

The Year 8 Boys played three games total for the day. We started off very strong against Maryborough with a commanding lead in the first half, winning the match 88-22.

Their next game was played against Irymple and the boys’ physicality and tenacity on defence pushed us out to the win 62-21. The final was played against St Joseph’s Echuca who played a strong first half, but we had a strong offensive push and finished the match on a win 79-29.

The Year 8 Boys have now qualified to play in the State Finals, which they are keenly anticipating.
