SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – STATE FINAL

Basketball – Year 8 Boys

The Year 8 Boys Basketball team travelled to Melbourne on Monday 13 November for the State Basketball finals. The team had progressed to the State Finals with ease, but with a few late injuries and playing against the best teams in the State, the boys had a challenging task ahead. The team played three games, each consisting of two fifteen-minute halves for the day.

The boys played a very skilful and well-drilled team from Lavalla Catholic College in the first game. This was a tough contest, the boys played hard physical basketball and, thanks to some 3-pointers from Max Connick, there were only a couple of points in it at halftime. Jett Bisset and Mykhail Geary stood their ground in defence and fought hard for every rebound. Unfortunately, Lavalla was too strong and CMC was defeated 38 to Lavalla 49.

The second game against Maribyrnong Sports Academy was at an excellent standard of basketball. Will Petersen showed his skills and leadership by attacking the ball and directing play on the court. Andrei Bertulfo and Brooklyn Smith gave it everything, applying defensive pressure all over the court. Again, the boys were goal-for-goal until halftime. Maribyrnong ran away with the win in the second half, with a final score of CMC 39 to Maribyrnong 50.

The final game was against Blackburn High School who had remained undefeated throughout the tournament. Blackburn was a well-trained team, with players moving the ball around quickly. Charlie Harrop and Izaiah O’Meara applied physicality to the opposition and drove the ball down to our attack end. In the second half, Max Connick was again throwing down 3-pointers with his impressive shooting skills, so much so that the opposition parents yelled out to stop player number 9. The final score was CMC 51 to Backburn 60.

Thank you to Tyce Griffin for scoring and to our injured players Joshua Kelly and Nick Harvey for supporting the team on the day. Thanks to the boys for a challenging but enjoyable day out.
