Year 9 Leadership In Sport – La Trobe University Experience

01/06/2023

On Wednesday 17 May, Year 9 ‘Leadership in Sport’ students spent the morning at La Trobe University where they explored the Health Science faculty and investigated various Health Science courses. To begin, students were given a lecture about university life, ATAR scores, subject selection at school, La Trobe Health Science course offerings and were addressed by the Head of the Exercise Science Department. Students then toured the university, where they observed university students in practical dentistry classes and paramedicine classes and they then explored the new Health Science Building.

After a brief break, students were then put through their paces in the gym, where they looked at some fitness testing protocols and how the results collected could be used by either a Physiotherapist, Exercise Physiologist or Exercise Scientist. Students were really engaged in the practical session and it was great to see them complete some hands-on learning, as a university student would do. (Mr Jack Timmins)

“I really enjoyed today as it is making me think more about what I want to be in the future. It has helped me realise what classes I need to do in school to access certain careers. I think it would be cool if we could offer this to all Year 9s, as we do with Bendigo Tech school.” (Rose McSweeney)

“I really enjoyed today at La Trobe. It helped me start to decide what I want to do with my life and my career. Today has made me change my way of thinking about my future career. I’m now thinking about the long run and what I want to do. Today’s gym session was good fun and it has made me want to go to the gym other than just at my house. I think that I should start to talk to some experienced people to learn about what I want to do.” (Jack Oldham)

“The part I enjoyed the most was learning about ATAR scores and how high they need to be for different subjects, as well as working in the gym. I like working out in the gym the most because I like muscle-building and fitness. Seeing how the guy helped us inspired me to help people similarly. I can see it as a potential future for me; helping people to get fit and recover from injuries. I’m also proud of myself that I could pull over 60kg on the Lat Pulldown as well as 100kg on the Leg Press. I think CMC should continue this program because it opened my mind to more career options, which could be the same for other people.” (Olivia Nicholls)

“I enjoyed La Trobe because there was a lot of information about different bachelor’s degrees we could do, what score is needed and how many years you study for. It really made me think about what I want to do when I’m older and consider if I want to do it at La Trobe. It was really interesting hearing about the paramedicine degree, for example how they stage a fake scene and challenge the paramedicine students with what a real-life situation would be like and how they would respond. I was also interested in the dummies in the hospital set up for the nurses and how they react like a real patient.” (April Downing)
