SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – SANDHURST DIVISION

Cricket – Year 8 Girls

On a stunning day at the beautiful new Mercy Junortoun Sporting precinct, our Year 8 Girls played Marist College Bendigo in the Sandhurst Division round of the SSV Year 8 Girls cricket competition. Playing the new Junior Stage 2 format for the first time, the girls were keen to use a proper ball, and know that all dismissals counted as actual wickets.

Layla O’Brien won the toss and sent Marist into bat. It was a brilliant choice as Dempsey McDonnell took two wickets in the first over to set them up for the day. Dempsey then took another wicket in her third over to finish with three in total.

All players managed to bowl at least one over each while containing Marists’ batters. After a quick drinks break at the 10-over mark, and with Marist on 42, the girls returned to the field on fire as they effected four runouts in quick succession on the back of some brilliant fielding. They were amazing with their effort and had Marist all out by the 18th over – 8/56.

The girls then headed out to the middle with confidence as Lexie Fennell and Madi Morrison opened the batting. All players contributed to the run chase with Madi top scoring with 22, with Madeline White (14) and Dempsey McDonnell (12), as the other top contributors. It was a terrific effort with the bat as the girls managed to bat out their 20 overs to finish on 4/104.

The girls now qualify for the Loddon Mallee Regional Finals to be played in Donald on Monday 23 October.
Congratulations girls on a terrific result, and good luck at the LMR day.
