SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – STATE QUARTER FINALS

Cricket – Year 7 Boys

On Thursday 16 November, the stage was set for the Year 7 Boys Cricket Quarter Finals at Beischer Park, Strathdale between CMC Bendigo and Viewbank College. CMC won the toss and chose to bowl first.

Openers Charlie Macumber and Jaxon Kelly did a good job with the new ball, restricting Viewbank to just 24 runs from the first 5 overs. The Viewbank batters then got their eye in and raced to 2/91 after 13 overs. A good fightback from all the bowlers, along with some exceptional catching saw Viewbank College finish their 20 overs with 117 runs on the board. Quinlan Cody was the pick of the bowlers with 3/22 off 4 overs, taking the first three wickets of the game.

CMC got off to a solid start with the bat, setting the platform for some more expansive stroke play to come later in the innings. CMC were 1/45 after 10 overs with some work to do. Jaxon Kelly then upped the scoring run rate alongside Quinlan Cody to set the equation of needing 36 runs to win from the last 5 overs. The Viewbank opening bowlers then came back on and proved to be too much for CMC, running away 10-run victors despite a 2-ball cameo of 8 from Jamison Westley batting at number 11. Jaxon Kelly (39) and Charlie Macumber (25) were top scorers with the bat.

The boys played the game in excellent spirits and will take a lot of confidence into next year.
