Year 12 Science Takeover at Coolock

05/06/2025

MERCY LEADERSHIP IN ACTION INITIATIVE

On Tuesday 27 May, nineteen Year 12 science students travelled to Coolock to run science-themed experiments for the Year 7 STEAM classes, to spark curiosity and passion for science and learning. Each class focussed on a different area of VCE Science, with the current Year 12 students actively leading and teaching each class, inspiring the next wave of budding scientists!

Physics saw the Year 7s take on the Year 12s in a challenge to innovate a landing system that safely brought a theoretical spacecraft to the surface of Mars. This was in the form of an egg drop and they needed to use their problem-solving skills to design systems that can protect the egg on impact. (Caleb Tobin)

In Chemistry, the Year 7s learnt about the importance of energy and how we can manipulate reactions to help us in our everyday lives. The students then experienced the exciting part of the day, holding a flame! (Campbell Mackenzie)

In Biology, the Year 7s used a gel electrophoresis to solve a crime scene involving their teachers and a fake murder. During this experiment the students learnt key science skills and came away with lots of knowledge about DNA and what biology offers. (Meg O’Callaghan)

In Psychology, Year 7s discovered the effect of branding on visual perception. They were excited to taste lots of lollies and learnt about the psychology behind how these large brands can change the way we think. (Bella Goggin)

We would like to say a massive thank you to all the staff and students from Coolock and St Mary’s who played a vital role in turning our project into a reality! We also hope the Year 7s thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Thank you!
