Year 11 Visit to Melville Caves

11/09/2025

On 22 August our Year 11 cohort travelled to Melville Caves as part of their Religion and Society program on Indigenous spirituality. It was a beautiful day and for many who had never been to this part of Victoria, a chance to experience new surroundings. Students commented throughout the day on their greater understanding, sense of awe and the connectedness they felt to Country, which many had not experienced before.

Some students’ reflections included:

“Our recent outing to the Melville caves was a great place to learn about Aboriginal Spirituality which we have been covering in our RE classes. We were lucky to have Indigenous park rangers who shared their story on how they feel connected to the land which was really interesting to learn about. Exploring the caves and looking at artifacts was a highlight for most people, but my favourite part was listening to the stories about how they feel connected to the land through spiritual signs from their ancestors.” (Zaidee)

“On this day we were provided with such a strong insight into Indigenous culture and traditions. It was a great opportunity to get a feel for the strong sense of spirituality and connectedness to the land that First Nations peoples experience. We were grateful for the experience and the passion and wisdom shared by the presenters.” (Sam, Charlie and Jack)

“The Melville Caves trip was a fun experience to experience a new sort of environment with many large rocks and cool caves. It was interesting to learn about both sides of the history of the land and how the Indigenous people connected and used the land to their advantage. Also, a great time to connect with the peers of my year level and explore and learn at the Melville Caves together!” (Bailey)
