Insights from Year 10 Work Experience

31/08/2023

Our Year 10 students have the opportunity to undertake a week of work experience. Catherine McAuley College is very grateful to the many businesses that mentor our students and give them the opportunity to experience work in industries that interest them. We are proud of all our students for taking up the challenge – they have been wonderful representatives of Catherine McAuley College. Thank you to the students below who have written reflections about their experiences. (Ms Madeline Dowling, Teacher)

BLOOMIN FLORAL STUDIO

Over my four days of work experience, I spent my time at the Bloomin Floral Studio with Tanya. Over the course of the week, I was able to learn skills that not only included floristry but also how to run a business on your own. With Tanya, I was shown how to create invoices for weddings, edit websites, order in new stock and also contribute to some of the more practical work. I was able to have free rein when designing a bouquet of my own after watching Tanya and how she puts one together. Creating posies was one of the best parts of going to the florist for my work experience, as well as getting an insight into the business side of things. (Pallas Condon, Year 10)

NEANGAR PARK GOLF CLUB

I spent five days doing work experience with Taylor at Neangar Park Golf Club as a Greenskeeper. During the week I was doing a bit of general maintenance around the course; this included, bunker raking, blowing greens, cutting new holes and fixing any issues with the course such as irrigation leaks and overhanging limbs on trees. I enjoyed the week and would definitely recommend this to someone who enjoys their golf or turf maintenance. (Mitchell Cakebread, Year 10)

RIGHTEOUS PUPS

I completed a week of work experience at Righteous Pups out at Lockwood.  Righteous pups train assistance dogs for people with diabetes, anxiety and autism.  They also have a doggy school for community dogs and some farm animals.  I was given the opportunity to train and work with different breeds, sizes and ages of dogs. I was taught how to clicker train the dogs and by the end of the week I was doing this on my own. Dog training is now something I’d like to continue beyond work experience. Throughout the week, I was given lots of opportunity to undertake different tasks like training, cleaning, disinfecting the kennels and feeding the puppies and farm animals. Other things I learnt were how to deal with different dog behaviours, such as a dog being too excited or too nervous to work with someone new. I really enjoyed meeting and working with some new people, the staff are all lovely. I would totally recommend work experience at Righteous Pups to anyone who is interested in dog training.  I had a fantastic time learning lots of new things and am very thankful for the opportunity of doing work experience at Righteous Pups. (Emma Georgeson, Year 10)

EVOLV HOMES

I recently went on Work Experience to Evolv Homes from 7 – 11 August. I spent a week building frames and using the drop saw. This helped me decide what I want to do when I am older and what pathway I want to go down. I learnt valuable things throughout my week, such as time efficiency and problem solving. The early mornings were rough but it was definitely worthwhile. (Llogan Mayman)
