Victorian Schools Netball Championships 2023

13/07/2023

On Wednesday 21 June, several teams from Catherine McAuley College travelled to the State Netball Centre in Melbourne for the Vic Schools Netball tournament. On the day they were supported by some amazing families who came along to watch.

Year 7

The day was anticipated to be a challenging one as our brilliant team of Year 7s were playing in the Year 7 and 8 pool. This meant they would come up against many Year 8s, including competing against our own Year 8 CMC team.

After a very tight win in the first game against Padua College, (14:12) the girls lost their next game to Sacre Coeur by four goals. This was an extremely tight match, with the girls going into halftime two goals up, however, after strong pressure from the opponents, we were eventually defeated.

The third game was against our own talented Year 8 team. This was also a tight game, with both teams taking some strong intercepts and forcing the other to make errors. Eventually the Year 7 girls went down 12-20 but their effort and intensity throughout the entire game was to be commended.

The final three games were much less intense, with wins of an average of 25 goals in each game. The future is bright for these talented girls, and they are to be commended for their work ethic, attitude, skill and the excellent sportsmanship they displayed throughout the entire tournament. Well done, girls.

Year 8

Our games results for the day were:

In the first game, CMC defeated Cornish College (28-8). This was a strong game where the girls established a quick lead and were able to get everyone on court to save their legs for later in the day.

In the next game, CMC defeated Padua College Yellow (22-5) and were able to switch the defence end around to try out new combinations.

When the girls played our own Year 7 Team it was a very tough game, with the Year 7s keeping the girls on their toes. The Year 8 team were the eventual winners (20-12), but only after some nervous passages of play.

In the game against Pauda College Navy, the girls started strongly, held the lead and kept working hard throughout the game to win (20-6).

The only loss of the day was against Sacre Coeur (15-17). This game was tightly contested and the girls were feeling the pressure, with some minor injuries and a shaky start in the first half. Some changes on court saw the players settle, but Sacre Coeur was able to secure the win.

The last game of the day was against Woodleigh School. After a loss the previous game, the team needed a strong lead to get through to the finals on percentage. In a game of great sportsmanship, the girls played strongly to win (41-1). The team was humble in victory, to the extent that the coach of the opposition commented on the amazing nature of our team.

The Year 8 girls now progress to the Finals Day to be held on Thursday 8 September at the State Netball Centre.
Everyone in the team represented the College with humility and amazing sportsmanship throughout the day. The versatility and ability of team members to work hard in whatever position they play is an amazing strength of this team. Congratulations team and we look forward to the Finals.

Year 9

The Year 9 team played four games for the day with the first game against Horsham College. The girls had a slow start and were 5-6 down at halftime. Soon they settled into their own style of play and won the match 18-11.

The second game was against Sacre Coeur. The girls started well having a four-goal lead at halftime, but a few errors across the court allowed the opposition to catch up, ending in a draw. The team now needed to win the remaining games and try and finish with a higher percentage to get through to the next stage.

The third game was against Padua College, which the team won 28-5. The final game was against St Monica’s College. The girls were determined to play well as they needed to build on their percentage. They won the match 31-6.

Well done to Lexie, Diana, Charlize, Charli, Lilly, Sunny, Zara, Emmy and Maeve on a successful day. Thanks to Lila for scoring and Maree and Holly for their assistance.
