Senior Girls
On 22 May, the CMCB Senior Girls Basketball Team competed in the Sandhurst Senior Basketball competition at Red Energy Arena, where they took on SEDA College, Marist College Bendigo and Bendigo Senior Secondary College in a 4-team round robin.
The first game was against Marist. The girls were prepared for a tough match, so they hit the court with determination. This positive attitude, as well as some impressive defensive pressure through the second half, effected turnovers at pivotal times. This determination and teamwork saw the girls eventually secure a terrific win 25-20.
The second game, against SEDA, was a much more casual match with all players able to get plenty of valuable court time as they dominated play to come away with another win, 49-9.
Finally, the last game was against BSSC, and the girls prepared themselves for another tough encounter. This game saw the girls start well by hitting the scoreboard early, as well as then defending with intent and restricting Senior’s opportunities. This effort and full-court pressure enabled the girls to create some brilliant attacking plays as they secured a fantastic win 49-32.
The team would like to thank all the organisers for making the day happen and are excited to have qualified for the Regional Finals to be played in Echuca on 25 July.

Senior Boys
On Thursday 22 May, the Senior Boys Basketball squad took on the Sandhurst Division competition. The round robin format meant that every game was important, and the team came up against Marist College Bendigo to start the day. While our team was still finding their energy and flow, Marist opened the account with some early 3-point shots and went out to an early lead. The boys rallied to stay in contact, but couldn’t overcome the early lead, going down 30-40.
In the second round, the boys were keen to make amends and hit the scoreboard early against Castlemaine Secondary College. Continued pressure on the ball and organised offence ensured a win was to come, and the positive energy returned to the team. They came away winners 53-37.
Upbeat and keen to keep the momentum going, the team took on SEDA. Hitting the scoreboard early was important, so the team took flight and got above the rim. A fast-flowing and high-scoring game was to follow, featuring a string of dunks, breaks and perimeter shots. This game built on the energy and saw everyone moving toward the final game with confidence, winning 96-51.
The final game of the day saw CMCB take on BSSC. With both teams coming out organised and eager to win, the boys needed to be at their best. Controlled play, tight defence and accurate shooting saw the team get right into the game and quickly shift ahead. Some great steals and strong work under the ring had the team well in control by the final siren, 42-19.
It was a tight contest all day with a challenging format. CMCB played well to hold the highest percentage and point totals for the day, but came in runners-up, owing to the early loss to Marist.
Congratulations boys on a great day. The maturity to bounce back from the early defeat was impressive.
