VICTORIAN SCHOOLS NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

PRELIMINARY ROUNDS

Year 10 Girls

With an early start, the Year 10 girls were full of optimism for the day’s competition with the return of goal shooter, Ciarah McDermott, who missed the first tournament due to concussion. Coach Clare Hope was also very eager to see how the team would perform on court now that the squad was at full strength.

We had 5 tough games against the following schools: Horsham College, Padua College, Cornish College, Maribyrnong College and Woodleigh School. We knew it was going to be a challenging day and our captains Jaida Raco and Neve Pinner very keen to lead the team to play at their absolute best.

Our Results were are follows:

Game 1 CMC vs Horsham: 14-14
Game 2 CMC vs Padua: 20-6
Game 3 CMC vs Cornish College: won 30-8
Game 4 CMC vs Maribyrnong: lost 12-20
Game 5 CMC vs Woodleigh: won 22-11

We had an amazing day finishing second overall in our pool. There were some amazing plays and teamwork on the court throughout the day and we really crystallised and become a team. Although the team finished second on the day, we are excited to still move on to the second stage of the SSV Competition in July. A huge thanks to all the teachers and Mrs Hope who made the day possible and special thanks to Tarah Frawley for being an amazing team manager and scorer.

Senior Girls

Our first match was against Padua College Yellow. With both teams starting strongly, it was goal for goal as we all settled into the game. Once our team started to find its feet, we took off, gaining an eight-goal lead in the first half. With no changes made to the line-up, we were able to settle into the game and come away with a 10-goal win (score 20-10).

Sacre Coeur College was our next opposition, and we were very evenly matched. Changing our line up to bring in some of the girls not used in the first match allowed us to bring a different style of game. With our girls being so versatile, we were able to give many varied options and styles of play throughout the day. At the end of the first half scores were tied, 5 goals each. In the second half, the girls applied some great defensive pressure from Layla, Maggie Burke and Sophie we were able to draw away to win by 5 goals.

Round 3 saw us come up against regular foes, Maribyrnong. Whenever we meet this team, we know we are going to have a tough contest as they are always a very skilled team, and this time was no exception. We threw what we had at them and gave it our best shot, but they got a 7-goal jump on us in the first half, and we were left playing catch-up for the rest of the game. Our girls tried valiantly to get in the match, but the opposition was exceptional, and they really played some beautiful netball. We lost the game by 10 goals but can be proud of the spirit shown to rally in the second half and really put some pressure on a respected opponent.

Round 4 saw us play Padua College Navy and we were able to get a jump on them right from the start. With Ava being fed the ball beautifully and finishing it off with ease we were able to establish a 6-goal lead by halftime. The team continued to extend their lead in the second half and take out a 9-goal win.

Our final match for the day saw us play against St Monica’s College in what proved to be a fabulous way to end the day. Players remained committed to a strong finish and took control of the match early, showing some great passages of play. The confidence was building throughout the match and we just kept pushing. There were plenty of laughs and fun and we finished the match winning 25-6.

“This day can only be described as a day to be proud of these young sportswomen. Every player in this group showed improvement throughout the day and followed directions explicitly. They lifted when they could and their ability to play with any combination of players on the court was excellent. Each player individually was a dream to coach and as a team they became stronger. They showed what it means to be a part of a team and they not only backed themselves but each other and should be very proud of their achievements. Thanks to the parents who came to support their children and to Maree Pearce for the exceptional organisation as always.” Mrs Kris Rosaia (Coach)
