Senior Volleyball take to court

SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – SANDHURST DIVISION

Volleyball – Senior Mixed

Catherine McAuley College Bendigo’s Senior Volleyball team took to the court in the recent Sandhurst region of the SSV Volleyball competition. Each of the three games would be critical in the pursuit of progress.

Game 1 was against SEDA. After some early hiccups, the team soon settled to ensure a rapid accumulation of points, taking the first set 20-8. Some great vision and use of the ball from Jaimeson Bell had the team ahead in the second set. The lead was sealed with some brilliant net play from Sebastian Dalton supported by Eh Htoo Wah to win the set 20-9.

Game 2 against Castlemaine Secondary College included some on-court changes. This team structure found a better system of play at the start of this set, with only a few minor errors costing points. Eh Htoo Taw Bleh Dah Moo was team captain for the day and directed the players to communicate more and play to their position. The team followed this call and took the first set 20-10. Shell Lar Moo successfully played the libero role and helped set the team up for a great second set. Castlemaine held serve for a short while, accumulating more points, until Hsar Ler Htoo stepped up and served well to ensure the win for the team as they took the second set, 20-12.

Game 3, against Bendigo Senior Secondary College, was expected to be a challenging one. With both teams having two wins prior, the match would decide the day’s winner. Sadly, early on our team struggled to hold serve long enough to maintain scoring progress, but still played well. Ezekiel Bourke provided good coverage at the net, while Saw Ta K’Yaw chased hard for the loose ball. Although the team dropped the first set 16-20, they still felt they were well in the match. When the second set started, Lin Win went in with plenty of energy to try and list the team. Despite their best intentions, the team struggled to get momentum until too late. With BSSC gaining an early lead, the efforts on the net and some good hitting weren’t enough to stem the flow, and BSSC took the second set, and the game, 10-20.

The team probably needed another game to really gel and find their style, but they can be proud of playing their respective roles and positions well. They represented the College with great sportsmanship.

Thanks to Mr Colin Hogan for coaching and mentoring the team.
