Senior Football – 2nd XVIII

10/04/2024

On Wednesday 2 March, our Senior 2nd XVIII Football Team took on Bendigo Senior Secondary College (BSSC) in our first-ever game on Finn Oval at our Coolock Campus, in what was effectively a trial match before both schools took part in the SSV Premier League Competition that starts early in Term 2.

The team had good mix of both Year 11 and 12 boys and they were looking forward to having a real crack, with the reward being possibly selected in the first XVIII come 1 May.

The team was captained by Oliver Edmiston who won the toss and kicked with a nice breeze towards the Mercy Junortoun Sporting Precinct (MJSP) building. It was a heated contest early in the quarter, with both teams getting shots on goal early. The CMCB boys kicked three points before they finally slotted a terrific goal.  This play ignited some great team play that resulted in another two majors being kicked late in the term, sending them into the quarter-time break with a 3-goal lead. Shannon Tardrew and Charlie King were everywhere through the midfield and the backline was holding up well led by Charlie Duke and Archer Billings.

In the second quarter, the boys worked hard in defence to stop BSSC scoring with the wind. On the back of that solid defence the midfielders were able to take the game on and create some rebound runs to manage to score a couple of opportunistic goals in the front half. Oliver Edmiston worked hard through the midfield along with Zane Connick who provided some clean hands around the contest to open the game up.  This fantastic teamwork saw the boys go into the half time break with a 30-point lead.

In the third quarter the game really opened up and the CMCB boys were now running in waves through the middle of the ground, putting the game out of reach of BSSC. Harvey White worked his way into the match with his bounce and run of half back and showed strength in the contest throughout the midfield.

The boys finished the game very well, especially given they all played and trialled in several different positions throughout the match. The boys ended up winning 13.10. 88 to 4.9.33 in what was a terrific start to the school football campaign for 2024. Congratulations boys on a fantastic game and result.

Thank you to our maintenance team for their work in setting up the team benches and having the ground in such amazing condition, and to Mrs Pearce and Mr Wild for their help on the day.
