Senior Basketball

27/06/2019

On Friday 21 June our Senior Basketball teams played in the Sandhurst tournament at the Bendigo Stadium. Both our boys and girls teams were looking strong, but they expected the games were going to be tough. This proved to be the case but both teams have now qualified for the Loddon Mallee Regional Championships to be played in Echuca on Thursday 25 July. We wish them well going forward.

Special thanks to Will Brohm who coached the boys on the day and Mrs Julianne Shelton for providing the lollies and water supply.

Senior Girls
The Senior Girls Team played just one game for the day and that was against Bendigo Senior Secondary College. The girls went into the match determined to have fun, focusing on sharing the ball around and making space for each other so they could attack the basket. This worked a treat. The match started evenly but, as the minutes ticked over, the girls slowly built a lead. Ruby Turner was finding space under the net and with the perfect passes into her she was getting the job done. All of the girls were making the most of any space that opened up. Their ability to read the state of play and either slow it down or speed it up was brilliant. They simply outplayed Senior and in the end ran out winners 35 points to 23. It was a great game and a well-deserved win by a great group of girls.

Senior Boys

The Senior Boys Team had two matches for the day. The first game was against the team from Sports Education and Development Australia (SEDA). This was a good match to start the day as it gave the boys the opportunity to get their eye in, get their team-work going and to rotate all players through the court. SEDA was a tough side and made the boys earn every point and, at times, challenged them. The Catherine McAuley College (CMC) boys did however manage to establish a great lead and won the match 66 points to 32. It was at times an entertaining game and was well contested.

Game 2 was against a very strong side from Bendigo Senior Secondary College (BSSC). Both teams had very talented lineups, so the match was always going to be a very tough battle. BSSC scored first, but the CMC crew was focused and had a simple, yet effective game plan sorted. As expected, the match was super-exciting, with the lead changing for most of the match and neither side able to dominate the scoreboard.

The pressure was intense as both sides were making errors and turning the ball over. However, CMC settled better in the second half and took control of play as their tactics began to come to the fore. The lead grew, and the minutes ticked down. As they often do however, BSSC mounted a challenge late in the half. A great 3-pointer to CMC’s Connor Mayman steadied the ship and the nerves of the rest of the team. Calm was restored, and they continued to play smart to win 26 point to 21 – the boys were delighted. Their performance was outstanding; they were a credit to themselves and their belief in each other to get the job done. Well done boys.
