Our girls went for IT
22/08/2018Go Girl, Go for IT
Go Girl, Go for IT is a free innovative and interactive showcase for girls between Years 5 to 12 held at Deakin University’s Burwood Campus on Thursday 16 August. The day provides a range of interactive, innovative and inspiring workshops and presentations highlighting a variety of roles, skills and opportunities included in the field of technology, from a vast range of people within the technology industry. The expo aims to identify to girls all the opportunities available to them if they choose a career in technology and is only run every second year. Our Years 7, 8 and 9 Martyn Program girls attended and had a brilliant day out.
At the Go Girl, Go For IT day our students participated in hands-on Tech workshops, working with leading software developers from Telstra to design and develop an app and then pitch their idea to a room full of people.
Our girls attended Tech Talks from the Go Girls Ambassadors, as well as career-inspiring stories of reliance and determination from young female entrepreneurs who have succeeded in this ever-changing and competitive workforce. Our students sat down with the IT team from ANZ to discuss what subjects at school had been key to their success, how they discovered their passion and what led them to their current career. The students gained an insight into the skills and work experience that were most favourable to employers in large organizations. The team shared their daily duties as: Analysis programmer, Project manager, Software designer, Hardware specialist and Change manager.
The favourite part of the day was the Tech Hall Trade Show where leading organizations showcased their offerings and handed out plenty of free samples and information. A wonderful, thought-provoking day, which we hope has given our female students something to aspire to in the future.
