Legal Studies students benefit from Lisa Chesters visit

10/08/2023

The Year 12 Legal Studies students recently received a visit from Lisa Chesters MP. Lisa generously visited the College to speak with our students about the referendum process. A key component of Unit 4 Legal Studies involves studying the Constitution and the intricacies of making and changing law in Australia. The requirement for a double majority referendum to allow for constitutional change is a safeguard of Australian democracy and students have been exploring this in depth. Ms Chesters spoke to the students about our previous successful referendums such as the 1967 Indigenous Referendum and provided students with the insights from the political sphere. The students also heard about the upcoming Voice referendum. This was beneficial for the students, to consolidate their knowledge on this topic. We are very grateful for the opportunity and thank Lisa for her time and generosity.

The Unit 4 Legal Studies students were honoured to be visited by Bendigo’s federal representative, Lisa Chesters MP. She spoke about the upcoming Voice to Parliament referendum and gave us insight into the purpose of the referendum and the effects it’ll have, as well as how the voting process occurs. She answered various questions, explaining the significance of this referendum on the whole of Australia, particularly for our Indigenous population.

On behalf of the Legal Studies students, thank you so much!
