School Sports Victoria – Sandhurst Division

Junior Volleyball

On Friday 8 March the Junior Boys and Girls Volleyball teams participated in Sandhurst Division Volleyball at Red Energy Arena.

Junior Boys

The boys played 6 matches against East Loddon P-12 College, Crusoe College, Victory Christian College (VCC) and Weeroona College.

In the first game, the boys took on East Loddon, winning two sets comfortably, 40-16. All members of the team played well with Nay Lae really leading by example and getting points on the board. In the second game, we lost against Crusoe, losing two sets, ending the match at 15-40.

The next game against VCC was tough with some solid defence from the opposition making it tough to score. Kahl did a great job of setting the ball for Darcy to spike on their defence. We ended up winning the second set but losing the first and third, unfortunately losing us the match.

The next two matches were against Weeroona, who fielded two sides for the competition (Blue and Maroon sides). We won the first match against Weeroona Maroon 60-42, but then lost the second match to the overall champions for the day, Weeroona Blue, 40-24. This was a hard-fought match, Simon’s serving kept us competitive throughout the sets.

During the finals round, the 5th team played against the 6th placed team, which was CMCB against East Loddon again and won 41-36.

An amazing job from the team throughout the day culminated in CMCB placing fifth for the day with 3 wins and 3 losses, the boys represented the College with outstanding sportsmanship, competitiveness, and respect for the other teams.

A special mention to Sebastian Dalton of Year 11 for a great job umpiring matches and helping coach the boys.

Junior Girls

The Junior Girls set out for a hectic day of competition. Over six games they were able to take either the win or draw, ending up in second place to Weeroona College.

Expertly coached by a skilful, enthusiastic, and talented volleyball player herself, Shell Lar Moo (Year 11), the girls worked incredibly well as a team. Sophie McDermott scored and worked the lines throughout the day in support, which was very much appreciated.

Arianna Gibson was steady, capable and calm under pressure. Eva Grant had some magical moments serving and volleying at the net. Rose Merry Ku showed great grit and determination, and Lilly Teuma’s booming serve, athletic skills and leadership on and off the court were to be admired.

Isabelle Swift was an all-round performer on the day, as was Zara Mould with endless energy and point-scoring deep volleys. Macey Pinner also performed solidly in a terrific team effort and Ellie Macumber participated in many rallies with a quiet determination.

Each girl should be proud of themselves for their positive competitive spirit on the day and for the respect shown to Shell Lar.

Intermediate Volleyball

On Friday 15 March, the Year 9/10 boys and girls participated in the Sandhurst Division Volleyball tournament playing against other local Bendigo schools at Red Energy Arena.

Intermediate Boys

The Intermediate Boys team played eight schools from the greater Bendigo region. CMCB played well, participating in many exciting rallies, and winning several matches in a row, including resounding wins against Creek Street Christian College and East Loddon P-12 College.

Chris Eddy captained the Boys team and showed great leadership. Daniel Nger, Ethan Pope and Eh Kla Soe made some great individual efforts, displaying great sportsmanship during the tournament. It was fantastic to have Saw Ta K’Yaw assisting with the coaching and refereeing throughout the day.

Overall, everyone played a high standard of volleyball and improved enormously throughout the day as the team finished fifth overall. Congratulations to Weeroona College who eventually won the day,

Mr Mathew Canterford, Teacher

Intermediate Girls

The intermediate Girls team competed in a pool of three, facing off against VCC and East Loddon. Despite their hard work and some impressive rallies, the team narrowly lost both games. Consequently, they moved on to the Bronze Medallion pool for further competition.

Their next match was against Eaglehawk Secondary College, each team won a set, leading to a decisive third set. Madeline De Hannan, Juliet Hogan, and Ruby Bath all used their height advantage to apply pressure at the net. However the game ended just before they could tie it, and the team fell short with a score of 8-7 in the third set.

Undeterred, the team regrouped for their next challenge against Creek Street. Hser Wah Wah Shee and Beatrice Monzon demonstrated excellent court coverage to keep the game alive. Once again, the match was closely contested, requiring a three-set decider. With Rosie Meh showcasing her skilful serving, the team maintained their determination and clinched the victory, ending the day on a positive note.

Throughout the day, the teamwork was exceptional, with each member representing the college with pride. Special thanks to Mr Egan for his support and guidance, and a shoutout to Eh Too Taw for serving as the team’s top referee, whose contribution was integral to the team’s participation in the tournament.
