SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – SANDHURST

BOYS NETBALL

On Friday 14 July, the Junior Boys and Intermediate Boys started off their netball campaigns in the Sandhurst Division at the Golden City netball courts. The weather promised a good day for netball, including a bit of sunshine and no rain.

Junior Boys Netball ‘A’ Team

The Junior Boys ‘A’ Team played four games for the day. Positions and game time was shared around, and we ended up winning every game by convincing margins. Each boy played their role – and we will work on that stepping!

The boys displayed excellent sportsmanship and were a pleasure to coach. The team has now qualified for direct entry into the State Final on 28 August. Congratulations to the team and thanks to the parents who came along to support the team.

The team:
Nick Harvey – Our massively tall GS who shot brilliantly, even when at one point he lost his shoe!
Cash Caldis – A versatile GA: once he got his eye in, there was no stopping him.
Joshua Kelly – Our mid-court jet whose speed and aerial skills dominated all over the court.
Henry O’Callaghan – Our specialist WA who drives hard down the court and offers options to the goalers outside the ring.
Griffin O’Shea – A master at both ends of the court, reading the play so well and accurate in goaling.
Jacobi Kramer – A WD specialist, who gets so many tips and intercepts, letting the opposition know he is always on to them.
Riley Travaglia – Another mid-court man who is always an option to pass to and seems to be everywhere defending and intercepting.
Samuel Whitford – Our dominant GD who rarely let the ball get down to the opposition’s attack end. A great reader of the play and who got countless intercepts. He even had a successful stint in GS for a half!
Darcy Tyler – Originally in the B team and got the call up on the day to be part of the A squad. He accepted without hesitation and proved why he deserved a spot there with his tenacity and countless intercepts and pressure on the ball.
Max Connick – Unable to play on the day due to illness, but we look forward to his return. Max will provide another tall and strong option in defence and can also shoot if needed.
Tayte Frawley – Our faithful scorer and lolly provider (thanks Tayte!). It was great to get him out on the court for a short run. He demonstrated a good understanding of the game and where he needed to be on the court, supporting some beautiful passages of play.

Junior Boys Netball ‘B’ Team

Our Junior Boys B team was keen to participate in the Sandhurst Division Netball Carnival, playing games against Bendigo South East College, Creek Street Christian College, Marist College Bendigo, Weeroona College, and Crusoe College. The team won all games convincingly and proved to be strong across all areas of the court.

The boys improved their footwork throughout the day and demonstrated significant progress in their ability to slow down the pace of the game. Mykhail Geary towered over his opponents and was an asset in goals, with our midcourt players Quinlan Cody and Eli Fennell putting the ball to his advantage. The team’s defensive pressure all over the court made the opposition second-guess, and the boys improved their defensive three feet throughout the day.

Harry Morrish showed excellent sportsmanship by stepping in for Creek Street when they were short a player. Well done to Harry for putting the spirit of the competition first and being a great ambassador for our school.

It was a pleasure to watch the team develop and improve their skills throughout the day. Well done for winning the competition.

TEAM: Mykhail Geary, Nicholas Hietbrink, Charlie Dickins, Jake Rosa, Elle Livingston (Coach), Charlie Macumber, Eli Fennell, Quinlan Cody, Harry Morrish, (Sam O’Bree, not pictured )

Intermediate Boys Netball ‘B’ Team

The tournament was a great day spent with a group of outstanding students, filled with excitement and valuable learning experiences. As the games progressed, all students embraced the challenge of learning the rules on the spot, and their improvement with each game was evident. The team showcased exceptional athletic ability and sportsmanship, securing victories in four out of the five games. Their outstanding performance reflected positively, not only on the school but also on themselves. They displayed remarkable sportsmanship towards their teammates, opponents, and officials throughout the day.

Every student in the team can take great pride in their skill level and the tremendous amount of knowledge they gained during the tournament. It was truly inspiring to witness their progress and growth as they adapted to different game situations and learned from their experiences, they should be commended for their efforts.

Overall, it was an exceptional day, and both the students and the school can celebrate their successes on and off the court. Their achievements serve as a reminder of the importance of teamwork, dedication, and a commitment to personal growth.
