SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – LODDON MALLEE REGIONAL FINALS

Intermediate Girls Soccer

On Thursday 1 June our Intermediate Girls Soccer team competed at the Loddon Mallee Regional Finals Day, which was held at the Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve. The format was a 5-team round robin, with two 15-minute halves.

The girls were in good spirits after their win from the Sandhurst round and were determined to keep the winning theme going.

In the first game, the girls played Swan Hill College. A goal in the first half to Evie Nuttall, really got the girls going, and Bella Goggin chipped in with two more goals in the second half. The day couldn’t have got off to a better start, with the win secured 3-0.

Game 2 was against a talented team from Irymple Secondary College. The girls really stepped up their team play in this game and were rewarded for their efforts with a 4 0. Goal scores were Evie Nutall – 2, Bella Goggin, and Jasmyn O’Keefe 1 each.

In Game 3, the girls played St Mary of the Angels Secondary College, Nathalia. This was a fun match for the girls, as both teams enjoyed the easygoing style of gameplay. The girls once again combined brilliantly all over the field, with Gemma Fox starring as goalkeeper and making several brilliant saves, including a penalty. The girls once again shared the goals around, with Bella Goggin and Dolly Thay both scoring 2 and Isabella Monotti kicking 1. This win saw the girls head into the final match equal top of the table with Girton Grammar School, effectively making this last game a ‘final’, as the winner would qualify for the State Finals.

The game against Girton was fast and skilful. Both teams were moving the ball around well and applying pressure to the ball carrier. It was Girton, however, who kicked 2 goals early in the first half to take the ascendency into the break. After re-grouping and a few positional changes, the CMC girls started the second half with confidence. They moved the ball better and were creating opportunities, only to be denied by some great defensive work by the Girton defenders and keeper. The girls had now shut down the Girton attacking moves, but just couldn’t find the back of the net themselves to apply any scoreboard pressure. It was a terrific game, and despite to 2-0 loss, the girls should be very proud of how they played and what they achieved, finishing as the LMR runners-up.

Congratulations girls on an amazing day.

Thanks to Mrs Tammy Goggin for attending the day with the students, and special thanks to Sophie Healy, Zara Mould and Ethan Pope for running the line and supporting the girls.
