SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – STATE FINALS

Intermediate Boys Netball

On Monday 1 September, the Intermediate Boys Netball Team made their way to the Waverly Netball Centre to compete in the School Sport Victoria Intermediate Boys Netball Championship.

The first game saw the boys come out fighting, setting themselves a 9-1 difference in the first quarter, which they held to win against Trinity College Colac, 28-13. In the second pool game, the boys played Mernda Central College, where once again they came away with a win, 21-9. The final pool game was against Catholic College Wodonga, the other undefeated team in the pool. Wodonga played a slow and steady game, which saw them win to finish first in our pool.

After finishing second in our pool, the boys played the top finishing team in the other pool, Balwyn High School. The boys worked incredibly well to overcome several challenges from the Balwyn team, successfully maintaining their lead and securing a spot in the grand final.

The State Grand Final saw our CMCB boys come up against the Wodonga Catholic College team once again. This time, the boys were confident that the momentum and calm play they had been building over the past two games would help them take the prize. The grand final was a wrestling match for the full 28 minutes, with the lead constantly changing and neither team being more than 4 goals up at any time. It was a fabulous team game to watch – the boys’ skills had improved immensely throughout the day, they were working to back each other up on the court and really put everything out there.

Unfortunately, the Wodonga goalers were too strong and Wodonga pulled away in the final minutes to win the game 24-22. The boys demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and discipline throughout the day, especially in an unfamiliar sport. They conducted themselves with respect and integrity – they should be very proud.

A special mention to Jake Rosa (Year 9), for filling in on the day, allowing the team to have eight players and use rolling subs.
