VICTORIAN SCHOOLS NETBALL – CHAMPIONSHIPS FINALS

YEAR 8 GIRLS

On Tuesday 5 September, our Year 8 Girls Netball Team participated in the Victorian Schools Netball Championships Finals Day held at the State Netball Centre.
After a busy week for the girls, they were pretty excited to see how they matched up against the strongest teams in the state. It was going to be a big day of netball with 9 games (2x7min halves) to play to qualify for the semifinals and the ultimate, State Final.

The results for the day were:

CMC def St Joseph’s College Echuca 11-8
A nervous start saw us making no changes as the girls took some time to settle, winning by three goals with an 8-3 2nd half.

Luther College Croydon def CMC 15-13
Another slow start cost us in a close game. We were down at halftime by three goals and came back strongly, but there just wasn’t enough time.

CMC def Lavalla Catholic College 11-2
With a slightly different starting line-up, we worked hard to gain a good lead going into halftime and kept the opposition goalless into the second half.

CMC def Flinders Christian Community College 12-8
We got away to a good start, making some positional changes at halftime and ran out with a good win.

CMC def Western Heights College 14-8
Having had a look at the majority of this team who played against our Year 7 team in the SSV State Final, we knew what we needed to work on in this game. A strong defensive game and steady attacking moves saw us capitalise on our hard work and win well.

CMC def Salesian College 11-8
In what was a very physical encounter, our girls played smart and disciplined netball to be level at halftime. Losing Maggie in the second half after a big bump saw us need to reconfigure quickly. We steadied and went on to win in a very close encounter, where it was goal for goal up until the last 30 seconds.

CMC draw Loreto College 6-6
This was a scrappy, low-scoring game where we had the lead at halftime, only to see it pegged back by a determined Loreto team, holding us to only one goal in the second half.

CMC def Iona College 12-9
A game of two halves: Iona had a lead of 7-2 at halftime. We switched on in the second half, readjusting to the game and outscored Iona 10-2. Some great goaling, and defensive pressure were highlights in this game.

CMC def Beaconhills College 13-3
Knowing we needed to win this match to secure second in our pool, we went into this game determined but hoping to preserve some legs for the semifinals. A great first half saw us take a 9-1 lead, allowing us to make some changes, and come away with the win.

This win saw us line up against Loreto College Toorak in the State Semifinal. Although tired, we were determined to give it our all. After a strong start, we led at halftime 5-4. We then started to tire, as Loreta took it up a notch. We fought hard, coming back with one minute to go, but were defeated 9-13 in a very high-standard match. This placed our team in the top four in the state – a huge achievement from an amazing team of eleven girls.
