Empowering families to support VCE students’ academic journey

17/02/2024

The St Mary’s Campus buzzed with activity on Wednesday 14 February when a large number of families gathered for the annual VCE Study Skills Evening. The event provided a valuable opportunity for students, parents and carers to actively participate in short workshops to strengthen study skills and the partnership between home and school for success in the senior years.

Participants engaged in workshops that delved into the emotional journey of the VCE, offering insights on how to support both students and their families through the highs and lows of this critical academic phase. Learning and organisational strategies specific to VCE were also discussed, providing attendees with practical tips to navigate the challenges associated with the curriculum.

Parents and carers were given valuable insights into how they can actively contribute to their child’s learning process. The event also addressed the often-mystifying world of Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) scores. Focused sessions on VCE English and Mathematics offered specific strategies for parents to assist their children in these challenging subjects. These workshops aimed to empower families with tools and techniques to support their child’s academic journey effectively.

One of the highlights of the evening was a dynamic Q & A session with former Year 12 students. This segment provided a unique opportunity for the audience to gain valuable insights into strategies that worked – and those that didn’t – for past VCE students. The exchange of experiences added a personal touch to the event, offering real-world advice to current VCE students and their families.
