Dream run ends for Senior Squad

06/09/2023

SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – STATE FINALS

NETBALL – Senior Girls

With an early start, the girls headed off to Waverly for what was to be the last time most of these girls would represent the College. We had a dream run with the traffic and hoped that the same would occur during our matches.

The first match of the day was against Bass Coast College. After a few turnovers due to some errors of our own, we settled and regrouped to lead at the first break by 6 goals to 3. Our defenders were on fire with plenty of intercepts, tips and taps that were then picked up and utilised by our attackers allowing the difference in score to extend. The hard work continued in each quarter to ensure we kept pushing and attacking the ball. All players performed well which ensured a win 28-17.

The second match was against Maribyrnong College. We had played this team earlier in the year and found them to be a very strong opposition, so we knew we had to bring our A game. Again, we had a few early turnovers against us that left us in the chasing position. With plenty of persistence, we pushed hard and were able to keep ourselves within reach through sheer determination. All players lifted and worked hard which saw us within 2 goals in the third quarter. Unfortunately, in the last quarter, tiredness began to creep in with a few wayward passes whilst Maribyrnong lifted. They were able to then stretch their lead to 10, defeating us 27-17.

The final game of the round saw us compete against Rowville Secondary College which is another sport-focused school, with strength and speed across the whole court. We knew it was going to be difficult to bring them down. Our players gave everything they had to this game and found that while they were competitive in the play, they were unable to give the goalers the opportunity to convert the goals, allowing Rowville to take control of the match early. Rowville proved to be very physical in every contest, however, our girls were able to maintain composure, despite the harassment. It was a tough end to a long campaign as the girls went down fighting, 29-10.

Congratulations to each of the players in the Senior Squad for their commitment, attitude and performance in the team this year. They have carried themselves with integrity and respect at all times and have shown that they are strong netballers in their own right as well as being very adaptable to different positions and instructions.

Thanks to Jess Millar who attended on the day as our scorer. Also a huge thank you to Maree Pearce for her ongoing support and organisation which is truly appreciated!
