Australian Synchrotron Excursion Fosters Excitement and Scientific Curiosity

09/06/2023

Our Year 10, 11 and 12 Physics students have been inspired by the incredible experience of visiting the Australian Synchrotron. This hands-on opportunity allowed our aspiring scientists to delve into the fascinating world of particle physics and witness cutting-edge technology in action.

Accompanied by our dedicated Physics teachers, Ms Smith, Ms Angove and Mr Angove, the students embarked on a journey to the Australian Synchrotron, one of the country’s most advanced scientific facilities, located in Clayton, Victoria. The synchrotron, a powerful particle accelerator, generates intense beams of light that enable scientists to study the properties and behaviours of matter at the atomic and molecular level.

During their visit, students had the privilege of experiencing a guided tour through the facility, led by expert scientists and researchers. They were taken behind the scenes to witness the intricate machinery and instruments that power this scientific marvel. From the particle accelerator itself to the complex beamlines and experimental stations, our students gained a firsthand understanding of the intricacies involved in particle physics research.

While at the synchrotron, students participated in lab experiments facilitated by Australian Synchrotron staff, that focussed on interactions of light and matter and provided students with meaningful learning opportunities to support their Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) Physics studies.

Interacting with the scientists and researchers at the synchrotron was invaluable for our students. They were able to engage in insightful discussions, ask questions, and receive guidance from the experts in the field. This personalised interaction allowed them to gain further knowledge, exchange ideas, and foster a sense of excitement and curiosity for their own scientific pursuits and possible future career pathways.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Australian Synchrotron staff for their warm hospitality and for opening their doors to our students. We are confident that this extraordinary experience will have a lasting impact on our budding physicists, inspiring them to continue their journey towards scientific knowledge.
