SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – SANDHURST DIVISION

NETBALL

Year 8 Girls

Congratulations to our Year 8 Netball teams on their impressive performances at the Sandhurst Division netball tournament held at the Golden City Netball Complex on Wednesday 3 May. Both teams were exceptional both on and off the court, and their results were amazing.

YEAR 8B
The 8B girls won all four of their games easily to progress through to the finals. The first final was against East Loddon P-12 College, which looked like it could have been a tough match. However, the girls soon dominated the game and easily won through to the grand final.

In the grand final the girls faced Marist College Bendigo which was the toughest match of the day. Our mid-court players, Jordie, Lannah, Eden and Holly, were terrific at feeding the ball into our goalers, Ady and Rhylee, who were shooting with great accuracy. Our defenders, Alyssa, Myah and Holly were terrific in the defensive end, with many intercepts and rebounds. The girls’ hard work and determination paid off, as they emerged victorious in the grand final by a margin of only 3 goals.

Overall, the girls demonstrated exceptional skill, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

YEAR 8A
The 8A team was very excited to play together in the first tournament of the year. All their pool games were brilliant to watch, and their talent was highlighted as indicated by their results:

Game 1: CMC defeated Weeroona College (33-2)
Game 2: CMC defeated Creek St Christian College (45-1)
Game 3: CMC defeated Bendigo South East Secondary College (34-0)
Game 4: CMC defeated Crusoe College (35-1)

These results put the girls into the semi-final where they met Marist College. After a shaky start, the girls settled to play some terrific netball and won 25-3 and qualified for the grand final.

The grand final saw the girls play Girton Grammar School. The girls took an early lead and never looked back, rotating players at halftime and going on to win 23-4.

This result saw the girls named as winners of the 8A competition for the Sandhurst region, and qualify for the SSV Regional finals to be played early in Term 3.

Everyone in the team of 11 played incredible netball – they are a very versatile team, and whether on court or supporting and helping out, the team members should be very proud of the way they represented the College. Congratulations girls and we look forward to the next stage of the competition.

Senior Girls

It was glorious weather for the Senior Girls Netball Competition on 15 May. Ten girls were selected from the squad of thirteen, with key player Maggie Keating ruled out through injury.

The first match was against Girton, who had been identified as a difficult team to beat. The first half was a chance for the girls to settle into some sort of rhythm as a team, with many unfamiliar on-court combinations being implemented. Play was strong and tough with many of the match-ups being equally matched as each team’s opponent tried to establish some sort of dominance.

At the halftime break the girls were up by just 1 goal, and the coach asked them to try to step it up and apply more pressure, after having some time to settle. The girls’ instantly went out hard and gained a 3-goal lead. They were looking strong, however, Girton came back at them and scored 3 quick goals to level the scores. With some fabulous defensive pressure and a critical turnover, the girls once again settled and with safe passage down the court were able to score and win the game by one goal. Final score – CMC 11, Girton 10.

The next match against SEDA saw more new combinations explored, as the girls learnt how to play within the new team dynamic. Accurate goal-shooting was on show from Hannah, Ava and Maggie who were given plenty of opportunities to capitalise from the midcourt and defensive dominance. The various combinations all worked and simply highlighted the versatility of the entire playing group. The final score for this match was CMC 35 to SEDA 4

The next game was against Bendigo Senior Secondary College (BSSC), another opposition with plenty of depth and determination. BSSC came out with strong passages of play moving the ball down the court with ease and finished with some very accurate goaling. The girls were a bit out of sorts and found themselves down by 1 goal at the break. The halftime message was simple, “get back on court, lift your intensity but ensure you maintain control of the ball when you get it”.

With a few valuable turnovers, opportunities came the girls’ way and they were able to find the space and continuity that they lacked in the first half as the goalers converted, to set up an eventual 3-goal win. It was a great reversal of form, with the final score being CMC 17 to BSSC 14.

The girls played Castlemaine next and showed how quickly they could adapt to any new combination. With plenty of speed on display from Bryde, along with her default ‘footy’ setting, she managed to punch the ball clear in a contest, that had a number of the girls laughing. The team were dominant in all thirds of the court throughout this match, with a lot of the hard work being done by the mid-court cohort as they put plenty of pressure on their opposition through the middle third. Assisting them in the turnovers were the defenders as they picked off many of Castlemaine’s forward attacks to rebound the ball back to our scoring end. The goalers then finished off this hard work as the team went on to record a strong win, defeating Castlemaine 23 to 5.

The last game of the competition was against Marist College which enabled the girls to wind up the day’s play with plenty of fun, lots of changes, and the ability to change the pace of the game when required. A small highlight was Sophie nearly taking out the umpire at one stage, but it was this type of desperation to win the ball that was so pleasing to the coach. Nothing in this game unsettled the girls, their ability to ascertain when to go hard and then when to steady and control the game was impressive, and the final score was a true reflection of this: CMC winning 23 goals to 3.

Congratulations to all players for your great teamwork, inclusiveness and respect for all involved in the day. Thanks to Maree Pearce for her organisation and capable bus driving and to Emma Ryan for umpiring. We look forward to the next round of competitions.
