SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA – SANDHURST DIVISION

Year 7 Boys

The Sandhurst Division Year 7 Boys Soccer competition was held on Tuesday 2 May at the Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve. The team played exceptionally well, winning their first two games convincingly.

In their first match, they defeated Bendigo South East College (BSE) 3-0, with Nay Lae Oo Ku and Bradie Sheldon displaying their attacking prowess, supported by a solid defence with Spencer Worthington in goals. The team followed it up with a 5-0 victory against Marist College Bendigo in their second game, dominating the match from start to finish. Tobias Jelbart showed his foot skills, attacking through the centre of the pitch, supported by the team’s left footer, Rhyder Michielsen.

The team’s excellent performance earned them a spot in the grand final, where they faced off against BSE once again. The match was fiercely contested, Fenton Phillips and Eli Fennell, along with their teammates applied defensive pressure with both teams fighting hard for the win. Despite the team’s valiant effort, they ended up losing 1-3 in the final.

The team should be proud of their achievements, having played some outstanding soccer throughout the day. The team’s success would not have been possible without the help of their dedicated assistant coach and referee, Graison Jelbart, who did an excellent job. The team’s coach, Mr Dunham, also deserves praise for his guidance and support throughout the tournament. A big thank you to Finn Worthington for being the team’s linesman and providing valuable assistance throughout the tournament.

Year 8 Boys & Junior Girls Soccer

The Sandhurst Division Junior Soccer competition was held on Wednesday 3 May at Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve. Both teams put in a commendable performance and showed their skills and abilities.

Junior Girls

The Junior Girls had a fantastic start to the day, finishing at the top of their pool after convincing wins over Crusoe College, Weeroona College and Marist College. The girls continued their momentum in the championship pool, winning the semi-final against BSE and progressing to the grand final.

In the grand final, the team faced a tough challenge against Castlemaine Secondary College. Despite their best efforts, the girls lost the final 1-0, finishing the tournament in second place. The team can take pride in their performances throughout the day and their overall achievement in reaching the final.

Year 8 Boys

The Year 8 Boys faced a tough challenge in their opening match against Girton Grammar School, scoring two late goals in the first half, the boys kept them goalless in the second with some excellent saves by the team goalie Owen Perry. The team worked hard in defence and kept the score to a 2-0 loss. The players didn’t let the loss deter them and continued to put in a strong effort in their next match against Crusoe. Unfortunately, they lost that match 1-0 in a closely contested game. However, in their final match of the day, the boys team managed to secure a victory, winning 2-0 with Ted scoring both goals.

A big thank you to our student helpers Graison Jelbart, Isabella Monotti, Asher Bowe, Ethan Pope and Xavier Horan: without you, the day could not take place. The performance of the girls’ team was particularly impressive, finishing at the top of their pool and reaching the final. The boys’ team may have faced some difficulties, but they showed their resilience and fighting spirit in the final game, securing a well-deserved victory.

Senior Boys

On Tuesday 9 May, our Senior Boys Soccer team competed in the Sandhurst Competition at the Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve.

In the first game, the boys took on a strong team from Girton. The game was extremely skillful with many opportunities being created by both teams. However, Girton soon managed to dominate possession in the first half and score 2 quick goals. At the break, it was discussed that the boys just needed to shut down the opposition’s time and space and apply more pressure on the ball carrier. This tactic worked and the CMC boys were terrific in the second half. They won back possession and finally created their own opportunities. Sadly, the full-time whistle went with the score remaining the same as it was at the break: 2-0 win for Girton.

Game 2 was against Marist College. The CMC boys dominated the match but were unable to find the back of the net, despite numerous shots on goal. With the game still a draw at the break, Joel Feeney took to the field, and this was a great tactical move. The boys’ passing and team play really improved as they started to create more space through the midfield. Joel ended up on the end of a missed clearance by Marist and scored a great goal. The boys continued to pepper the goal, but no other score resulted, leaving CMC with a 1-0 win.

The third game was against the star-studded line-up from Bendigo Senior Secondary College. This game was a lot of fun, with both teams enjoying time in possession of the ball. Bendigo Senior, however, had periods where they simply dominated play. They were a very skilful side, full of talent, and were able to hit the back of the net on several occasions. Tamba Basha did an outstanding job as the keeper, saving many shots on goal and the 3-0 score was, in fact, a great result for the boys.

It was a fantastic day, and we congratulate the boys on their efforts and on the way, they conducted themselves. It was an absolute pleasure to spend the day with them.

Thanks to Joel Feeney for running the line (for the majority of the day), and to Noah Kelly who assisted with coaching the boys. Thanks also to Ms Ashlee Burke for assisting on the day.
