Year 12 Biologists Dive into Yeast Respiration for Final SAC!
11/09/2025The science labs at St Mary’s have been buzzing with energy as our Year 12 Biology students take on their final School-Assessed Coursework (SAC) of the year – a hands-on scientific investigation into aerobic respiration in yeast.
This isn’t just any experiment. It’s the culmination of six years of scientific learning, where students are applying everything, they’ve mastered – from experimental design and data analysis to critical thinking and collaboration. Each group has chosen a variable to test, exploring how factors like temperature, sugar concentration, or substrate levels affect yeast’s ability to respire aerobically.
The result? A vibrant mix of bubbling flasks, thoughtful hypotheses, and plenty of teamwork. Students are working together to troubleshoot, refine their methods, and interpret their results – all while having a great time doing real science.
To showcase their findings, students are creating scientific posters that highlight their investigations, results, and conclusions. These posters reflect not only their scientific skills but also their creativity and communication abilities.
It’s been a joy to watch our budding scientists engage deeply with the scientific process, ask meaningful questions, and support one another through the challenges of experimentation. The atmosphere has been one of fun, curiosity, and collaboration – a perfect way to wrap up their high school science journey.
Well done, Unit 3/4 Biologists
