Synchrotron Excursion Enhances VCE Physics Studies
18/06/2025On Tuesday 10 June the VCE Units 1 and 3 Physics students went on an excursion to the Australian Synchrotron, in Clayton.
The Synchrotron is a particle accelerator, that speeds up electrons to travel at almost the speed of light (approximately 300 000 km per second, or roughly the speed to travel around the world 7.5 times per second).
The Synchrotron produces extremely bright light – about 1000 times brighter than the sun – and researchers can use this light for all sorts of image analysis that can’t be done elsewhere. The applications range from medicine, to forensic science, to art analysis. The synchrotron has been used to dramatically improve health outcomes for premature babies, for developing vaccines and improving the quality of Cadbury chocolate.
Students observed real-world applications of science, and participated in lab workshops targeted at the VCE Physics curriculum.
