2nd XVIII Senior Boys
On Thursday 24 April, Catherine McAuley College Bendigo hosted Bendigo Senior Secondary College in the 2nd XVIII match at our Coolock Campus. The boys were super keen to put their best foot forward to try and secure a spot in the premier team.
The first quarter was scrappy early, with our midfielders eventually showing their class around the football and winning many stoppage clearances. The boys pressured the opposition through excellent tackling and winning the contested footy. Jack Nuttall started on fire as he regularly won possession and gave our forwards excellent entries by kicking the ball in dangerous areas. Llogan Mayman was a presence down forward as he impacted several contests and got the ball to the ground, giving our small forwards plenty of opportunities. The score at the quarter time break was CMCB 21 to BSSC 6.
It didn’t take long for Darby Whatley to have an impact in the 2nd quarter, as he slotted a goal at the 3-minute mark. Darby continued to show his class by staying composed and hitting targets all around the ground. Jimmy Mathews and Charlie Duke were dangerous down the back, taking intercept marks regularly and setting up a lot of attacks from the back half. Tom Davie was another player who was having an impact on the game, kicking his second goal at the 6-minute mark, as well as finding plenty of the football around the ground. By half time, the boys were starting to build a lead with the score 41 to 7.
In the 3rd quarter, the magnets were rotated around the coach’s board, and it gave the boys plenty of opportunities to play in different positions. Jake Schubert, Cal Whyte and Sam Gibson started well in the midfield, winning clearances and hitting targets within the forward line. Their defensive pressure around the footy did not go unnoticed. Jack Nuttall continued to find the footy and use his leg speed to create a lot of run through the middle, making it hard for BSSC to put any defensive pressure on. By ¾ time, the score was continually building, with CMC kicking 5 goals and keeping BSSC scoreless. (74 to 7).
The boys still had plenty to give in the last quarter as Tom Davie & Jack Nuttall both kicked their third goal each, as they continued to find plenty of football and give the forwards plenty of opportunities. Charlie Mortimer continued his excellent ball-winning ability and regularly gave the outside runners opportunities through his effective decision-making. The final score was 101-26.
All players should be proud of their efforts. Congratulations boys, on a terrific win.
